Foundation Board of Directors Officers

Patrick Ryan '74, Chair, is president of The PDR Group, a private investment company, and president of The PDR Foundation, a private charitable foundation. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration (1974) from Bowling Green State University and an MBA (1980) from Indiana University. He also is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Ohio. He is a member of the BGSU Foundation Board and served on the Campaign Planning Task Force. Mr. Ryan and his wife, Debra (Scheetz) '74, have established an endowed professorship in biology. They also are members of the National Campaign Steering Committee. They reside in Wadsworth, Ohio.

Edward Reiter '62, Past Chair, retired senior chairman and chairman of the executive committee of Sky Financial Group. A 1962 graduate of Bowling Green State University and former high school teacher, Mr. Reiter has been with Sky and its predecessor, Mid American National Bank, for 40 years, advancing from teller to CEO. He is a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee and a former Alumni Association Board of Trustees member. He is known for his involvement with numerous community organizations, such as United Way, the Toledo Symphony, COSI, St. Vincent's Medical Center and Easter Seals. Mr. Reiter received the Alumni Community Award in 1991 and the Distinguished (Business Education) Alumni Award in 1992. Mr. Reiter and his wife, Linda (Wiener) Reiter '61, reside in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Thomas Orchard '75, Chair Elect, is Senior Vice President, Investments, for UBS Wealth Management in Columbus, a Senior Portfolio Manager in the UBS Portfolio Management Program and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He received a bachelor's degree in business (1975) from Bowling Green State University. He is a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee, the College of Arts & Sciences Advocates Board and the BGSU Presidents Club. He is married to Martha Anne (Zink) Orchard (1973). They have one daughter and reside in Westerville, Ohio.

Theresa Braun '80, '85, Treasurer, holds a bachelor's degree in education (1980) and a master's degree in college student personnel (1985) from Bowling Green State University. She has served on the board of directors of the Christ Lutheran Children's Center and the Sylvania Metro Amateur Hockey League and was a trustee for Maumee Valley Country Day School. She co-founded the BGSU Carolinas Alumni Chapter, has served on the BGSU Alumni Advisory Committee and is a current member of the BGSU Presidents Club Advisory Committee. She currently serves as national co-chair of the Phillips Exeter Academy Annual Giving Parent Fund. Ms. Popp Braun and her husband, Ray '80, are members of the BGSU Presidents Club and reside in Holland, Ohio, with their two children.

J. Douglas Smith, president and CEO, Bowling Green, Ohio, serves as the university's Vice President for University Advancement. Smmith came to Bowling Green State University from the Leukemia Society of America (New York City) where he served as Senior Vice President of Fund Raising and Chapter Development (1994-1997). Prior to his time with LSA, he had a 21-year career in management and development with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (1973-1993), the last ten at the executive level as Vice President of Field Services, and Vice President of Fund-raising.

James Bailey '67, New Canaan, Connecticut, is chief operating officer with U.S. Trust, in charge of the company's management-marketing area. He retired as executive vice president at Citibank in 2001 after working for the company for 28 years. He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Bowling Green State University and a master's degree in mathematics from New York University. Mr. Bailey is a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee. He is a board member of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and a member of the Advisory Board for the College of Arts & Sciences at New York University. He is a past member of the U.S. and International Board of Directors of VISA and the Board of the Depository Trust Corporation.

Jerry Batt '87, Bowling Green, Ohio, is chief executive officer of Sky Insurance (previously Celaris Group), Maumee, Ohio, one of the 50 largest insurance agencies in the nation. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration. He is a member of the Sky Insurance Board and the Sky Financial Group Leadership Committee. Additionally, he is forum leader chairman of the Young President's Organization and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Board. He is a member of Dayspring Assembly of God and a youth baseball coach. Mr. Batt received the Glenn Sharp Award and the Doyt L. Perry Award for his support of the BGSU athletic program.

Rohan Champion '78, Toledo, Ohio, is former vice president of corporate planning and strategy at Owens Corning Fiberglas, Toledo, served as chief executive officer for Volante Technologies, based in New York, NY, and eTime Capital Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif. He also previously was a vice president at Federal Express and AT&T, and held various executive and senior leadership positions at Novell Inc., Oracle and IBM. Mr. Champion received a bachelor's degree in computer science.

Robert Dimling '63, Cincinnati, Ohio, is an attorney with Frost Brown Todd LLC, Cincinnati, where he practices in the labor and employment law area. He serves as co-chair of the firm's Labor and Employment Law Department. Mr. Dimling is a Presidents Club member and was involved in a major family gift to the student union renovation. His brother and sister-in-law, as well as his son and daughter, are all graduates of BGSU. He is very involved in the Cincinnati community, currently serving as a board member for Kids Helping Kids and as a safety and health committee member for the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. He also previously was a board member for Beechwood Home and the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.

Everett Gallagher '83, New Albany, Ohio, is senior vice president, Enterprise Tax, for Wendy's International in Dublin, Ohio. Previously, he was a partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Columbus. As a student, he served as president of the Undergraduate Student Government. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business. He has an endowed scholarship fund in the College of Business Administration. Mr. Gallagher serves on the investment and finance committee for the Columbus Foundation and on the Columbus Children's Advisory Board.

Gordon Hamm '87, Ho Ho Kus, N.J, is partner and chief operating officer for Garage Management Corp. in New York City, which operates parking garages in many major metropolitan cities. He also is general manager for Autotech Nissan and is involved in several other small businesses. He serves as vice president of the Metropolitan Parking Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Welfare Pension Fund. Mr. Hamm was a member of the Campaign Planning Task Force and is currently serving on the National Campaign Steering Committee.

Kathryn Hoops '80, Perrysburg Township, Ohio, is vice president, director of tax and assistant treasurer, for HCR Manor Care Inc. in Toledo. Previously, she was managing partner of the Toledo office of (Arthur) Andersen, the firm she joined upon receiving her bachelor's degree in accounting. She is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and Tax Executives Institute. She is a current board member and past president of the Toledo Area Planned Giving Council, and also serves on the boards of the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce and North American Science Associates Inc. In addition, she is treasurer of the board of the HCR Manor Care Foundation. Ms. Hoops is a past director of the BGSU Alumni Association.

Sherrie Jones '72, '76, Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., a retired school administrator, is president of Sherrie L. Jones Enterprises Inc. At Lamphere Public Schools, Dr. Jones was principal and director of curriculum and technology. She was also a teacher at St. Mary Elementary in Tiffin and Fostoria Public Schools. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education and her master of education degree in reading both from Bowling Green State and her doctorate degree in education administration and supervision from Wayne State University. She has endowed a major scholarship fund in the BGSU College of Education and Human Development and serves as a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee.

Bernard Karr '69, Shaker Heights, Ohio, has been with the law firm of McDonald Hopkins Co., LPA since January 1978 and is the department manager for the firm's estate planning and probate practice. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University and his juris doctorate degree with honors from The Ohio State University College of Law. He received his LL.M. in taxation degree from New York University School of Law. A Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Council, he is listed in Best Lawyers in America, Ohio Super Lawyers, Swathmore's Who's Who and Northern Ohio Live's Ohio's Top Lawyers. Mr. Karr is a director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland and a director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, as well as chairman of the Fred E. Scholl Charitable Foundation.

Berton Keith, '56, San Jose, Calif., is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. Lt. Col. Keith counsels graduate students at the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, where he has been a member of the Board of Trustees for over 15 years. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University and a master's degree in business from Sul Ross State University. He is president of his neighborhood school site council, president of an investment club, and consults for several electronic firms and the San Jose Small Business Administration. He is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and The Retired Officers Association.

Daniel Keller '72, '79, Huron, Ohio, is president of Kellco, a private investment company specializing in venture capital and small businesses. He recently retired from Cedar Fair L.P., where he was vice president and general manager for Cedar Point in Sandusky. He previously served in the same capacity at Cedar Point's Kansas City, Mo., amusement park. Mr. Keller received a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in business administration. He is a Presidents Club member and a former member of the BGSU Alumni Association Board of Trustees. He has been active in numerous community organizations.

Michael E. Kuhlin '68 is retired from SBC/Ameritech in Chicago, where he served as senior director for corporate contributions. Since retiring, he has assisted the Lyric Opera of Chicago with fund-raising activities. He received a bachelor's degree in journalism/public relations (1968) from BGSU. As a student, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa. He received the BGSU Distinguished Service Award and Outstanding Greek Man award. He worked in the Office of the Dean of Students as a residence hall director and was assistant director in the Office of Career Planning & Placement. He and his wife, Sara, reside in Romeoville, Ill.

Vivian Moore Lawyer '68, Ellicott City, Md., is chief human resources officer at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. Before joining the staff at Montgomery College in 1975, she served as assistant to the dean of students and coordinator of Human Resources/Director of Equal Opportunity at Bowling Green State University. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Bowling Green State University, a master's degree and a juris doctor degree from Catholic University. She is a member of the Supreme Court, American and Maryland bar associations, as well as the Association for Participation and Quality, The American Society for Training and Development and the Society for Human Resource Management. She is active in her community as a member of the Baltimore Chapter of the Coalition of 100 Black Women, and past president of the Columbia, Maryland Chapter of The Links Inc., and the Columbia Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc.

J. Michael McGuire '82, Charlotte, N.C., is the managing partner of the four offices that comprise Grant Thornton's Carolinas Practice (Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro, N.C. and Columbia, S.C.). Mr. McGuire has spent the last 23 years serving the needs of rapidly growing businesses throughout the Carolinas. He is a frequent speaker on topics such as entrepreneurship and leadership. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting and management information systems. He was a former partner for Arthur Anderson Inc. Mr. McGuire is active within the Charlotte community, currently serving on the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Business Advisory Council (BAC), Business Innovation & Growth Council and Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the board of directors for the United Way of Central Carolinas, The Entrepreneurship Institute and the Charlotte Arts & Sciences Council.

Bruce K. Misamore '72, '73, Houston, Texas, is the former chief financial officer at one of the largest Russian oil companies, YUKOS Oil Company in Moscow. Before YUKOS, he was senior vice president of finance and treasurer for PennzEnergy Company and vice president and treasurer of Pennzoil Company. He also was a manager at Marathon Oil Company for a number of years. From 1972-74, Mr. Misamore was a graduate assistant and instructor of finance at BGSU. He earned his bachelor's degree in finance in 1972 and an MBA in 1973. He was recognized as one of Toledo's 10 Outstanding Young Men in 1975 and was listed in the 1978 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. Mr. Misamore is a member of Financial Executives International, the BGSU National Campaign Steering Committee, BGSU's Presidents Club and the Dean's Council of the College of Business Administration. In 2004, he was recognized as an Accomplished Graduate of the BGSU College of Business Administration.

Hiroko Nakamoto '54, '92, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., is founder/owner and president/CEO of Hiroko Nakamoto Inc. of Tokyo, Japan. She is also the company's lead interior designer and decorator. She earned her bachelor's degree in fine art from Bowling Green State University and studied interior design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as in San Francisco, Paris, Italy, Egypt and Beirut. BGSU also awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts in 1992 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1973. She authored a book in 1970 called My Japan. She has established the Hiroko Nakamoto Japanese Studies Scholarship and the Japanese Tea Room on campus.

Marlene Norton '75, Bowling Green, Ohio, is a certified public accountant and a partner at Norton & Associates, an accounting firm in Bowling Green. She received a master's degree of accountancy from Bowling Green State University. She is a Dean's Council member for the College of Musical Arts. As an avid supporter of the college's Festival Series and Jazz Week, she has helped underwrite concerts. Previously, she was a trustee for Owens Community College, as well as a board member for the Epilepsy Center, and the Private Industry Council for Wood and Lucas Counties.

Bruce Nyberg '68, Birmingham, Mich., is regional president of Huntington National Bank, Troy, Mich. Prior to joining Huntington in April 2001, he was senior vice president of new product development and electronic banking for Bank One. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Bowling Green State University and a master of business administration degree from University of Michigan. Currently, he serves on the National Conference for Community and Justice Board, the Detroit Neighborhood Housing Services Board and the Forgotten Harvest Board. He and his wife, Katherine, have a scholarship fund in education.

Ed Phillips '61, Beavercreek, Ohio, is chairman of the board for Phillips Companies, which includes Phillips Sand & Gravel, Phillips Ready Mix and DRECO. He served as corporation president from 1961-2001. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration. He has been active in numerous professional, fraternal and community organizations, including past president of the Ohio Ready Mixed Concrete Association, past president of Greene County YMCA. He also is a past member of the BGSU Alumni Association Board of Directors, and is a member of the Presidents Club, Falcon Club and Varsity BG Club. He was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national honorary fraternity, and was named a BGSU Silver Letterman's Award winner by the BGSU Athletic Department.

Geoffrey Radbill '68, Long Island, New York, retired in 2004 as senior vice president, Human Resources/Retail Distribution Initiatives, and chief operating officer for the Retail Sales Force at AXA Financial/Equitable Life Assurance Society. He held various managerial positions with the company in Massachusetts, California, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania for 36 years. He earned a bachelor's degree in finance (1968) from Bowling Green State University. In addition to his involvement at BGSU, he is active with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Cancer Society. Previously he was a Registered Investment Adviser, Registered Representative, and a Registered Securities Principal of the NASD, a member of the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters and Chartered Financial Consultants, and the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way.

Gerald Rader '54, Findlay, Ohio, retired in 1986 as tax manager from Marathon Oil Co., Findlay, Ohio, where he worked for 32 years. While there he was responsible for worldwide tax compliance and planning. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting (1954) from Bowling Green State University. He is involved in the Findlay community, including past president of Findlay Exchange Club; a member of Findlay Country Club; Indian River Golf Club, where he is past president, treasurer and director and a member of the finance and budget committee; Norcrest Presbyterian Church; and past Falcon Club Advisory Board member. A 1st Lieutenant, he was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for officers' artillery school and as an officer with Radar Officer Battery A, 36th AAA Millile Battalion, Fort Meade, Maryland, from 1955-57.

Carlleen Scott '61, Pebble Beach, California, received a bachelor's degree in human resource management (1961) from Bowling Green State University. She and her husband, Lary R. Scott (1961), are Presidents Club members and sponsor a scholarship in the College of Business Administration. Mrs. Scott also is a member of the Bowling Green State University National Campaign Steering Committee.

Hugh Smith Jr. '53, Los Angeles, California, is president of the UCLA Center on Aging. Mr. Smith received his bachelor's degree in business administration (1953) from Bowling Green State University and graduated (1965) from Pacific Coast Banking School, University of Washington. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958, where he was discharged as a Captain. He organized Western Bank in Los Angeles and served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer from 1973 to 1996. In addition, he has been very active on the boards of many banking associations. Mr. Smith is a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee.

Jacien Steele '77, Atlanta, Ga., is a partner with Deloitte Tax LLP. He currently serves as the national managing partner for the Global Strategic Client Tax Services and serves as a member of the Tax Management Group. He is member of the board council to the board of directors of Deloitte & Touche LLP and currently serves two of the top 20 tax clients of the firm. He is a member of the American Institute of CPA's and the Georgia and Ohio Societies of CPA's. He is a member of the BGSU Presidents Club and has served on the Dean's Advisory Council to the College of Business Administration. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration. His civic activities include serving as the chairman of the board of CHRIS Kids and as a board member of The Sheltering Arms of Atlanta. He is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta and a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way and the Board of Governors of the 191 Club.

Suzanne Thompson '61, Athens, Ohio, received a bachelor's degree in home economics from Bowling Green State University and a master's degree in curriculum/instruction from Ohio University. She is a retired instructor at Ohio University, though she continues to be very involved in the community in a variety of activities. She is a former member of the Ohio University College of Education Alumni Board and has served on the BGSU Alumni Board. During her tenure on the BGSU Alumni Board, she took a special interest in promoting and supporting the Alumni Center Endowment for upkeep, enhancement and preservation of the center.

Michael Weger '67 is president of The Weger Group and owns the Willow Creek Golf and Sports Center in Lake Orion, Michigan, north of Detroit. Previously he spent 10 years in the NFL where he was an All-Pro defensive back with the Detroit Lions (1967-75) and then with the Houston Oilers (1976-77). He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration (1967) from BGSU before being drafted by the Lions. As a student, he was a member of Varsity Club, A Cappella Choir, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and a letter winner in both football and track. In football he earned first team MidAmerican Conference and Division I All American honors as a defensive back. Recently Mike made a significant pledge commitment to the Sebo Athletic Center. Weger was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972 for football. He lives in Oxford, Michigan.

Ronald Whitehouse '67, Free Union, Va., is a retired entrepreneur, who earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Bowling Green State University and his MBA from University of Toledo. He is past chairman of the board for HQ Network Systems in San Francisco, and is the former CEO and owner of HQ Chicago, HQ Florida, HQ Indianapolis and HQ San Diego. Mr. Whitehouse also was CEO and owner of Whitehouse Industries Inc., and Johnston Boiler Co. He received the Distinguished Graduate Award in 2004, and as a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee is co-chair of the BGSU Building Dreams Centennial Campaign.

Max Williamson '60, Dublin, Ohio, is chairman of the board for Scottsdale Insurance Company. He served as president and chief operating officers of the company from 1995 to 2004 and has been in the insurance industry for more than 40 years. Mr. Williamson, a former president and member of the BGSU Alumni Association Board, earned his bachelor's degree in business administration. He also served on the boards of the Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education, Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation and the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices. He received the Vincent Donahue Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Managing General Agents and the Spirit of Life Award from the California Insurance Council for City of Hope.
