July 30, 2007 | Family Campaign Reaches New Heights

Faculty, staff and retirees joined together to make BGSU’s Family Campaign the most successful to date. More than $1 million in gifts and pledges was raised for scholarships and a host of campus programs and services.

The 2007 goal was $700,000 in cash and 56% participation. The campaign far exceeded its cash goal and ended with $801,325 in cash and 53.58% participation.

A massive volunteer effort across campus helps spread the word about Family Campaign each year. A 21 member cabinet and nearly 90 department representatives promote Family Campaign and the ability to designate gifts to any area on campus.

“The momentum the campus has created with Family Campaign is tremendous. It sends a very positive message to our alumni and friends that the people closest to BGSU truly believe in our mission and support it generously,” said Michelle Banks, Director of Annual Giving and Family Campaign Coordinator.

That internal support can equate to external support as well. Many corporations and foundations consider an institution’s faculty and staff giving levels when awarding grants and contributions. In addition, all gifts for Family Campaign count toward BGSU’s $120 million Building Dreams Campaign.

Since its inception in 1999, Family Campaign has raised $8.29 million. “That is a true testament to the generosity of our faculty, staff and retirees,” Banks said. “When you consider the impact $8 million can have on our campus and for our students, it’s remarkable.”

| BGSU secures $150,000 grant from Charlotte R. Schmidlapp fund

Fifth Third Bank representatives presented a check for $150,000 from the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund to Bowling Green State University to support scholarships for women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering or math.

Women from the Cincinnati and Piqua area will be given first priority for scholarship dollars because the Schmidlapp family was from that area. Northwestern Ohio and other Ohio residents will also be eligible.

“The Charlotte Schmidlapp fund is continuing its tradition of support for education for women through this grant,” said Robert W. LaClair, President and CEO, Fifth Third Bank, (Northwestern Ohio).

BGSU President Sidney A. Ribeau said, “Women are still under-represented in science, mathematics and engineering. Educators agree that greater emphasis needs to be placed on increasing the interest of young women in these fields. Scholarships through the Charlotte Schmidlapp Fund will encourage more women to pursue these careers.”

The commitment by the Charlotte Schmidlapp Trust , Fifth Third Bank, Trustee, will be counted as part of BGSU's Building Dreams Campaign, a campaign that has raised more than $114 million. The $120 million campaign runs through December 2008.

In 1907 a noted philanthropist and former Fifth Third Bank president, Jacob Schmidlapp had already lost his wife, his mother and his daughter, Emma, in a train wreck when he and his remaining daughter Charlotte, were touring France to celebrate Charlotte’s graduation. In a freak auto accident, Charlotte was killed. Mr. Schmidlapp channeled his grief by establishing the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund in l908 to allow other young women to, unlike his daughters, realize their lives’ dreams.
